This 84-mile loop drive takes you though high dessert, mountain passes, canyons with flowing streams and lush valleys with vistas that seem to go on forever. With several great detours (the Cimmaron Canyon, Taos Ski Valley, the Wild Rivers Area and the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge), the drive can fill a half day or a full day. Wild Rivers Recreation Area
With many hiking and walking options, this is an awe-inspiring place. The Rio Grande and the Red Rivers flows together here and the gorge is at its deepest. There's an easy rim trail that makes a loop and several ways to hike to the river. Click here to see a map of the area. Many of our guests report that they saw only one or two other people while hiking. Taos has great scenic beauty and there is no other place that wows as much as the Wild Rivers Area.
